Austin Lee Hoffman

Austin Hoffman
A hero was taken to Heaven September 4, 2015 after being in a car accident Sunday, August 30, 2015. Austin was a real 16-year-old “trooper.” He loved his family, friends, sports, and especially the outdoors. Fishing was his passion, he would fish everyday if he could. Reeling the big ones in that “always get away.” Austin knew at age 16 he wanted to be an organ donor. This unselfish act has already helped many and doctors said more than 150 people will benefit from this heroic young man. Austin was loved by all who knew him.
 Austin died Sept. 4, 2015 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born March 16, 1999 in Chanute to Dustin and Amanda Hoffman.  
He has resided in Lyons since 2012, moving from Hutchinson.  
He was an avid fisherman and lifeguard at the Lyons City Pool for the past two years. He was a junior at Lyons High School where he was a member of the Lyons High School debate team, wrestling team, tennis team, and was a pole vaulter on the track team.
He is survived by his parents, Dustin and Amanda Hoffman of Lyons; siblings, Christian Dale and Ramie Jo Hoffman, both of Lyons; paternal grandparents, Joanne and Michael Pope of Kansas City, and Archie and Vanessa Hoffman of Hutchinson; maternal grandparents, Hank and Mary Willems of Lawrence; paternal great grandmother, Geraldine Ayres of Baldwin City; aunt, Stephanie and Mark McKelvy of Omaha, Neb.; uncle, Jason and Nancy Willems of San Mateo, Calif.; other family members, Jason Hoffman and Tally Hoffman; and many cousins, and close friends; most faithful friend and dog Meisje.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Isabelle Hoffman; 3 great uncles, Butch Hoffman, Wiley Stevens, and John Wilkinson, Sr.; and a great aunt Patricia Stevens.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 at First Baptist Church, Lyons with Pastor Joel Grizzle officiating.
Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 at First Baptist Church, Lyons.
Memorials may be made to Austin Lee Hoffman Memorial Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home.
Please bring your special memories, pictures, or mementos to share with others. There will be hugs, smiles, and tears. “Our loving hero Austin is no longer with us on Earth, but he will live on through the lives of many.” 

Spencer, James C.

James C. “Jim” Spencer

James C. “Jim” Spencer, 52, died Dec. 22, 2014 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 11, 1962 in Emporia Kansas to Dwight L. and Martha L. Campbell Spencer.
He was a Lyons resident and a farmer.
He is survived by his long time companion, Donnetta Lawrence of New Waverly, Texas.; three brothers, Robert W Spencer of Lyons, Timothy D. and Katy Spencer of Emporia, and George A. Spencer of McPherson; and sister, Janet Bosomworth of Tell City, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Lynn.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Martinez, Gasparita Blea

Gasparita Blea Martinez

Gasparita Blea Martinez, 90, died Dec. 29, 2014 at McPherson Care Center in McPherson. She was born May 6, 1924 in Clayton, N.M., daughter of Nabor and Saliae Blea.
She was a resident of Lyons since 1972, formerly of Hugoton. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Lyons.
She married Eli E. Martinez on April 10, 1944 in Clayton, N.M. He preceded her in death on May 8, 2012.
She is survived by two sons, Fred Martinez and Lee Martinez, both of Lyons; two daughters, Angela Martinez and Dodie Candelario, both of Lyons; half brother, George Blea of Clayton, N.M.; two half sisters, Mary Blea of Clayton, N.M. and Geneva Archuleta of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents and four sisters.
Rosary was Jan. 1, 2015 at 7 p.m. at Birzer Funeral Home in Lyons. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, Jan. 2, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in Lyons with Father Robert Spencer officiating. Burial was at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Birzer Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to St. Paul Catholic  Church in care of Birzer Funeral Home.

Vern Steffen

Vern Steffen

Larned – Vern Arlyn Steffen, 83, passed away September 12, 2014, at his home in Larned.

 He was born June 18, 1931, in Burdett, the son of Clarence O. and Jessie L. Whaley Steffen.

A lifetime area resident he was a farmer, a real estate agent for 24 years and real estate appraiser for 12 years.

 He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Larned.  He was born and raised on the farm north of Burdett, where he lived for 41 years, he served in the United States Army, spending 17 months in Korea, was a professional pilot for 3 years, was a John Deere Dealer for 6 years and a Pawnee County Commissioner for 12 years.  Vern loved to travel and has visited fifty countries or islands.

 On March 30, 1952, he married Ruth I. Kasselman in Zook, Kansas.  She passed away February 1, 2012.

 Survivors include: two sons, Tony Steffen and wife Christin, Wichita and Craig Steffen and wife Janice, Olathe; a brother, Duane Steffen and wife Shirley, Hays ; a sister, Arlene Henley, Birmingham, Alabama; five grandchildren; one great grandchild and a special friend Lillis Stambaugh, Larned.

 Funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding.  Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.  Burial will be in the Browns Grove Cemetery, Burdett with Military Graveside Rites.

Michael Tener

Michael Tener, 51, died August 4, 2014 in Wichita Kansas. Services will be held Saturday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at 17988 South West Countyline Road, Rosehill, KS 67133.

Jan C. Adams

Jan C. Adams, 71, died Aug. 6, 2014 at Presbyterian Manor in Sterling. She was born Aug. 12, 1942 in Salem, Ill., daughter of Ervin and Helen Woodward Rogers.
She was a Lyons resident since 1993, formerly of Pollard Community. She was a homemaker, truck driver and a restaurant cook. She attended Iuka High School in Iuka, Ill. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lyons.
She married Jerry J. Adams in 1967 in Russell. She is survived by husband, Jerry of the home; two daughters, Kathi and Manuel Gomez of Lyons, Renee and Jim Dodson of Sterling; three grandchildren, Jerred Snow, Cody Snow, Hallie Dodson; two great-grandchildren, Cannon Snow and Lyla Snow.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, James K. Rogers.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Lyons with Rev. Joel Grizzle officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014 at Birzer Funeral Home in Lyons with family present. Memorials can be made to Center for Basic Cancer Research KSU in care of Birzer Funeral Home.
